Need Help! Fashion as Art!

Is fashion an art?
If it is who is the artist. The person who wears a piece of clothes as her identification or the designer who has designed it?

Under Jennfier Lopez picture:
Nevelson's argument, what she is wearing is not a direct representation of her, but of the designer Versace, thus it is not art. "Who are you wearing?...Versace."

Modern sculptor Louise Nevelson states “Fashion could be an art, but it isn’t,”

the best of fashion is worthy of the name art”  Norman Norell

So what is your ideas on that?

Do you think you are an artists putting clothes on yourself or you just the consumer ?

 Need ideas and different views!

  1. Both people are the artists in a sense:

The designer as they created the piece to look the way it does, material, style etc.

The consumer buys the product and puts it together with other clothing to create a 'look' that they feel suites them.

Designer and consumer can be accredited with being artists :D

  2. Generally, I agree with the previous comment.
I can only add some insights.

    Fashion DESIGN is art.
So a designer is an artist.

People who wear the pieces 1. are followers of fashion. They like to wear designer pieces - artwork by someone else. You could also call them consumers. You wear it to feel comfortable or protect yourself (for example from the weather) , to fit in or give a certain impression to the public (when you wish to be seen as one or the other. I think that has mostly to do with the need for love and approval from the outside. Wishing to fit in, be accepted by a certain group of people, or wishing that people look up to you, wishing to get attention with shocking styles.) One example of consumers is when hundreds of girls buy and wear the same thing, because it's fashion. They are consuming the product that comes out of somebody's intial artistic expression (how designer clothes become mass-production for everyday people). - Watch Devil Wears Prada. :D

People who wear the pieces 2. are artists, when they use the pieces to express themselves. When they create a new look as they put things together and wear them. When they create a common look using uncommon pieces. When they create an uncommon look using common pieces. When you don't consider what's fashionable, but consider what *you* like instead. Sometimes I feel a weird spark or a good kind of tension in me, when I match stuff together and suddenly like what I see. Matching things you don't expect to see together, whether designer, mass-production or vintage pieces. When it tickles my soul, I consider it art. The styling, the matching, the creating something new for yourself with what you HAVE - that's what I consider artistic. It's not neccessarily about having amazing, gorgeous pieces of clothing - wearing designer clothes makes you look like the designer, mostly (it's not a bad thing). I think anyone can put on a gorgeous piece and look gorgeous. It doesn't mean they are creative, it means they have the possibility to buy/wear pieces that are made gorgeous for them (by designers). But when you don't have a gorgeous piece for every life-situation, then you've got to be creative with what you have. I appreciate styles which express the personality of the person even when their sources are limited. You make something out of nothing. Use what you have. I think that's how the street styles are born.
Of course this creative styling is influenced by the masses, so the street styles differ all over the world.
The purpose is not neccessarily to stand out, but to feel good about what yourself, liking the way you look.
And that depends on the person - not everyone are interested in the way they look or in styling outfits. So, not everyone look interesting for people who ARE interested in it.
Like, when I'm not interested in maths, I'm not impressing any mathematicians with my work. And I don't find their clothing styles impressive. But also, that's not something I expect them to be good at.
It's said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think style is also, in some ways. When you are used to seeing conventional art (for example ballet in dance, mass-production in fashion) then you wouldn't find something different interesting or good looking (for example contemporary style in dance, street styles in fashion).
Comes down to interest, sense of aesthetics and expectations.

Ahahaha.. long story short. I am an artist when I create a new look (for myself) with my clothing. I'm a consumer when I put on a huge winter jacket to keep warm.

    Designers are artists.

Thanks for asking my opinion. Rõhutan, it's ONLY my opinion. I don't know if this is any help for you. I don't know if you expected me to write only 2 sentences. These are the thoughts that hit me.

    Love & luck,
    Tiina

  5. Every little thing you use your imagination for, in that case designing a piece of clothing or putting these pieces together, is art.
